Archdale
John Archdale - Undertaker

John Archdale built a castle in 1615 on the eastern shore of Lower Lough Erne. The bawn consisted of lime and stone with three flankers 5m high and a house within a bawn, 24m long and three storeys high. The flankers and almost all the house has gone and what remains seems to date from the rebuilding. The arched gate, 2m wide has traces of a lean-to covered area inside, probably 1615 period. Destroyed by Rory Maguire in 1641 it was rebuilt and inhabited until 1689 when it was burnt out and abandoned.

Archdale is defined as Old Castle Archdale, to distinguish it from the largest Palladian house in County Fermanagh built by Colonel Mervyn Archdale in 1778. It was partly demolished in 1970.

Castle Archdale is now one of ten country parks in Northern Ireland and the castle ruins are in State Care.
