The castle was built for Malcolm Hamilton, a native of Scotland, by 1618. It stands on a rocky bluff, originally above a crannog (a man made island), about 10km NW of Enniskillen and is the largest and best preserved plantation castle in County Fermanagh.
Initially, a strong castle of lime and stone was built. A 4m high bawn wall was constructed later which contained two flankers. The castle acted as a third, which in turn commanded the fourth corner. The castle, three storeys high, is in characteristic Scottish style and was first documented in detail by the Earl of Belmore in 1894 and more recently by the Historic Monuments and Buildings Branch, Department of Environment for Northern Ireland.
